New McSpicy? Lovin’ It - And Other McD Burgers That Live In My Head Rent-Free

I love McDonald’s.

Every time I travel overseas, die-die I must visit the Golden Arches. And whenever a new burger gets introduced here, I cancel all my plans to go and try it.

McDonald’s Singapore has just dropped the new Smoky Chilli Mayo McSpicy, so I rushed down faster than you can say “upsized fries”. Tbh, I am not the biggest McSpicy fan – I haven’t even ordered one this year. Not that I can’t take the heat (don’t challenge me, you sure lose), but it’s just that when I am craving a spicy chicken burger, I’d rather go to Popeyes (their take really slaps).

The smoky chilli mayo sauce was nice, not the greatest, but it made each bite taste way better than the OG McSpicy. The best addition for me has to be the fried egg – I don’t understand why McDonald’s doesn’t add fried egg to more burgers, or give us the option to add one. Altogether, the combination is ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 for me.

As I licked the spicy mayo off my fingers (classy, I know), I started thinking about all the McDonald’s burgers I’ve had around the world. I genuinely think McD’s international offerings are one of the greatest joys of travel. Some people look up museums; I look up what’s on the McDonald’s menu.

So here it is, my top McDonald’s burgers ever – from a Singaporean who clearly travels with his stomach.

1. McRib – Germany

You’ve probably heard of how popular this burger is in the US. People queue for the saucy, sticky dream that is the McRib. While this one pops up for a limited time there, you can actually order a McRib any time of the year in Germany. It blew my mind. I had it for the first time on a layover in Munich Airport and I could never forget it. It was on my bucket list when I went back to Germany for a holiday.

Why it made the list: Smoky BBQ sauce. Tender German pork. That looooong soft bun. It was giving "fast food, but gourmet" vibes.

2. Golden Prosperity Burger – Malaysia

Yes, I know Singapore gets it too. But Malaysia’s Prosperity Burger really hits different. Maybe it’s the pepper sauce ratio. Maybe it's the slightly longer run from early December to after CNY. Maybe it’s all in my head. It's practically part of my Lunar New Year ritual now. I think I would have it maybe 5-6 times?

Why it made the list: Nostalgia. Saucy goodness. That juicy beef (or chicken) patty, the slathering of black pepper sauce, the soft onions paired with twister fries? And the best part – a whole hash brown patty. How come Singapore doesn’t have that?

3. Ebi Filet-O Burger – Japan

Not to be confused with the one-off version Singapore had years ago, the Ebi Filet-O Burger in Japan is in a league of its own and available any time of the year. McDonald’s in the Land of the Rising Sun loves to put out limited‑edition burgers, and I order them whenever I’m there. But I will still order an Ebi Burger at least once on every trip.

Why it made the list: Juicy shrimp patty, shredded cabbage, and that tangy sauce that pulls it all together. Japan doesn’t play when it comes to quality. This is seafood fast food royalty.

4. Wasabi Filet-O-Fish – France

And speaking of seafood, I’m reminded of this surprisingly amazing Filet-O-Fish variant I had while walking along Champs-Élysées avenue in Paris. It was a Filet-O-Fish, but instead of tartar sauce it came with wasabi mayo. I’m sorry, but someone in that Paris McDonald’s R&D team deserves a raise. The wasabi wasn’t too strong – just enough to wake your taste buds without blowing your nose off. Btw, if you’re ever there, I recommend you sit at the outdoor terrace covered in flowers.

Why it made the list: This is how you do limited edition. Subtle twist, major flavour. Even my wife loved it and she doesn’t like McDonald’s half as much as I do.

5. Big Brekkie Burger – Australia

The Big Brekkie Burger proves that Aussies know how to breakfast right. Except that you can also order this massive burger for lunch. It has a hash brown, sausage patty, bacon, egg, cheese and BBQ sauce. The last time I had this was nearly 4 years ago – while doing my research, I found out they’ve added another meat patty to this monster. Wow.

Why it made the list: It was basically the breakfast platter of my dreams in one soft, greasy package. Also, did I mention the hash brown inside?

Bonus wish: McDonald’s Singapore, please bring back the Hokkaido Salmon Burger

Before I go, I just want to say: Singapore, please bring back the Hokkaido Salmon Burger. I still think about it every now and then. Maybe we can meet at the McSpicy Museum at Bugis to discuss?
