Did you know that emojis have been used for over 20 years? It all started in 1999 when artist Shigetaka Kurita created the first set of 176 emojis for Japanese mobile phone company DOCOMO.
World Emoji Day was first celebrated on 17 Jul 2014, thanks to Jeremy Burge, the founder of Emojipedia. The date was chosen because it’s the one shown on the calendar emoji 📅
